On Thursday July 20, 2023 HEART of Saguache hosted Lucha Martinez de Luna in Center, Colorado at the San Luis Valley American Indian Center, where she gave a presentation on Chicano/a/x Murals of Colorado. On Friday July 21 she did the presentation in Saguache at The Range. Both presentations included group discussions with those in attendance on San Luis Valley mural projects and histories. This programming took place in partnership with HEART of Saguache, AHEC, The SLV American Indian Center, The Range, and Sisters of Color United for Education with funding from a Saguache County Sales Tax Grant. Thank you so much to Lucha for visiting our communities and sharing this important project with us!

In Pleas and Petitions Virginia Sánchez sheds new light on the political obstacles, cultural conflicts, and institutional racism experienced by Hispano legislators in the wake of the legal establishment of the Territory of Colorado. The book reexamines the transformation of some 7,000 Hispano settlers from citizens of New Mexico territory to citizens of the newly formed Colorado territory, as well as the effects of territorial legislation on the lives of those residing in the region as a whole.

The Health Equity Youth Alliance has been meeting monthly this spring and summer in different towns throughout the San Luis Valley, bringing together youth from Antonito, Saguache, and San Luis. Youth have engaged in relationship building activities and introduction to health equity work. Thank you to SLV Super Bowl in Monte Vista for hosting us in June, and to Dominic 'Cano' Espinoza for sharing his castle on our visit to Antonito. HEYA participants look forward to a 10 day convening and training with Transformative Alliances, hosted by Shooting Stars Culture Center in Alamosa in late July and early August.
